So with Discord becoming just a corporate data-harvesting platform, I've looked at alternatives and stumbled upon this Canadian based Linux group's project.

They're claiming encrypted P2P messaging. All data stays on local systems, no middle man. For registering you dont give them any info, not even email. Just type in a username you want, and done, you've got Jami.

Very wide platform support too.

Having used it for a couple days now, it seems quite competent, with only bugs on the Winslop 11, unsurprisingly. Has kinda old MSN Messenger/Skype vibes to it, with some clearly modern bits taken from Discord in design.

Thoughts?

Looks promising, I'll have to check it out.

With some more days using Jami. It still seems alright, even if the program seems to have some sync issues. Where when logging in, it can take up to an hour to sync up with new messages.

It's kinda crazy how many discord alternatives have showed up just recently. Been also eyeing this one called Fluxer https://fluxer.app/

They offer much more discord-like interface, but also self-hosting. Though they're right now having network issues from the sheer amount of new adopters (and DoSSing).

I am down for anything making an alternative to Discord at this point.

I'm just hoping for some more self-hosted options though.

Fluxer self-hosting seems very in WIP right now. But I'm keeping an eye on it. And like I said earlier, their server is pretty much cooked right now, even if they moved it to new hardware.

I might still look into making a private IRC server on a RPI, if Fluxer takes too long to develop the self-hosting side.
